With the upcoming holiday Halloween, watching horror films will be one of the many ways to celebrate. The films featured on this list are available to be seen at your own home. Also, this list will not feature any classic horror films such as “Halloween”, “Psycho”, and “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” etc. Whether you are someone who is a horror film veteran or someone who keeps a blanket with them during these films, this list contains movies that are perfectly suitable for you to celebrate Halloween.
The Babadook (2014) – Amelia is feeling loss six years after the death of her husband and she is struggling to discipline her six-year-old son. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster that he believes will kill both him and his mother. When a horrifying storybook titled ‘The Babadook’ appears at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the monster that is in his dreams. He begins to hallucinate uncontrollably and becomes violently unpredictable. Amelia becomes fearful of Samuel’s behavior and finds no other choice but to provide him medication. However, when Amelia begins to see a sinister presence, she slowly realizes that Samuel’s warning was indeed real.
Sinister (2012) – True-crime novelist Ellison Oswald is experiencing difficulty in his career since he has not had a bestselling novel in more than a decade and is desperately seeking out for any opportunity for a hit novel. When he discovers a box of mysterious snuff films showing the deaths of a family, he becomes interested in solving the mystery behind their deaths. He moves into the victim’s home with his family and begins working on solving the mystery. However, when aged film footage and other signs hint at the possible presence of something supernatural, Ellison realizes that living in the house was not the best idea.
The Ring (2002) – A disturbing videotape filled with images that seems to be out of a nightmare appears to determine life and death over those who view it in this thriller. After watching the videotape, viewers receive a telephone call with a warning that they will die in seven days. Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller feels skeptical of the story until a handful of teenagers who viewed the tape all die on the same weekend night at a cabin in the mountains. With this, Rachel feels a great sense of curiosity and tracks down the video to watch it. That leaves her seven days to solve the mystery behind the videotape. The Ring was adapted from a 1996 Japanese film by Hideo Nakata, which became a massive box-office success in Asia and led to the creation of two sequels.
The Void (2017) – When police officer Carter discovers a man soaked in blood on a deserted road during his night shift, he takes him to a hospital. Cloaked cult-like figures begin to surround the building, preventing the patients and staff inside from escaping and causing them to become insane. In his effort to protect the survivors, Carter finds himself leading them to a part of the hospital where they discover a mysterious gateway.
Saw (2004) – The film that started the hit series Saw. Two male photographers Adam Stanheight and Dr. Gordon, find themselves chained to pipes in a mysterious chamber. They both have no idea how either of them got there and neither of them feel any optimism when they see a man lying in the middle of the chamber dead with a self-inflicted gunshot. The two soon realize they have been trapped by a sadistic serial killer who goes by the name Jigsaw and must complete his puzzle to escape.
Grave Encounters (2011) – Lance Preston and the crew of the ghost-hunting reality television show “Grave Encounters,” are shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital where unexplained events have been reported throughout the years. The crew voluntarily lock themselves inside the building overnight to begin a paranormal investigation by capturing footage on camera. They soon realize that the building is beyond haunted and that it is as if it is alive by not allowing them to leave. With this, the crew find themselves lost in a endless maze of hallways and corridors while being terrorized by the ghosts of former patients.
Get Out (2017) – Chris and his girlfriend Rose, have reached the point in their relationship to meet each other’s parents. When it was Chris’s time to meet Rose’s parents for a weekend in their secluded estate in the woods, he first reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as their way of attempting to face their daughter’s interracial relationship. However, as the weekend progresses, the friendly ambience gives way to increasingly disturbing discoveries that lead Chris to finding a truth he would have never expected.
Split (2016) – It is believed that some people with dissociative identity disorder can manifest unique attributes for each personality. Though Kevin has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher, one still remains submerged who is set to materialize over all the others. Three girls end up kidnapped by this man diagnosed with these 23 distinct personalities and now they must escape before the emergence of the 24th.
Don’t Breathe (2016) – Three Detroit thieves Rocky, Alex, and Money make their living by breaking into the houses of wealthy people. Money learns about a blind veteran who gained a cash settlement after the death of his only child. Believing that this blind veteran would be a vulnerable target, the three invade the man’s home in an abandoned neighborhood. They find themselves trapped inside of his house desperate to escape and they soon realize that they must fight for their lives after learning something shocking about their underestimated victim.
